2011 Hall of Fame

Ted Chase

Ted Chase - Ted Chase, former GHS band and choral director who composed the Glenwood school song, has been selected to receive the nomination for Service. Ted began his career at the Ball-Chatham School District in 1957 as band and choral director for Glenwood High School, Chatham Elementary and Ball Elementary. Under his leadership, the band grew from 22to 52 students and the choir from 23 to 54. In addition, Ted coached the Glenwood Speech Team in 1958 to contest honors.Glenwood High School’s first jazz band was begun by Ted in 1962. The high school’s concert, jazz and choral groups won honors at all levels of Illinois’ music contests. Thephenomenal growth of both the band and choral programs led to Ted’s recommending that the district hire a full-time choral director. His foresight kept both programs growing and led to many additional opportunities for students. In fact, through his collaboration with the new choral director, the first Glenwood High School musical was performed. Ted’s interests included sports as well as music. In 1973, he lobbied administration to provide students with a “sustainable sport opportunity” resulting in the creation of GHS’ first tennis team. His dedication to his students went beyond the school day as well. Examples such as voluntarily coming to school once a week in the summer to help a former student prepare for a college scholarship audition and opening the gym to basketball practice in the summer and providing adult supervision, made an indelible impression on all his students.

Brian McClure - Brian McClure, a 1992 graduate of Glenwood High School, is being inducted into the Hall of Fame for Athletics. He holds many baseball records at Glenwood, including ranking 1st in career hits (171), career stolen bases (85,) and stolen bases for a season (42) and is also tied for 1st in career triples with 22. He hit .494 in 1991 which ranks as the 5th highest batting average in a season for Glenwood hitters. His .454 career batting average ranks 3rd. His runs scored ranks him 3rd for both a season and a career. He ranks 4th in career home runs with 20, and RBIs with 122. Brian struck out only 21 times over his four year varsity career in 379 at bats. He struck out just three times in his junior season in 89 at bats. Brian went on to be a four-year starter and achieved All-Big Ten and All-American honors in baseball for the University of Illinois. After college, Brian played professional baseball for the San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers. His success didn’t stop on the playing field, however. Valuing his time, and the ability to better control his future, he chose a different career in financial planning. He is now a Managing Partner for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Champaign, Illinois; and founded McClure Financial Group,Inc., which has grown to five offices throughout Illinois with locations in Champaign, Kankakee, Normal, Peoria, and Springfield. Brian has earned many awards during his career at Northwestern Mutual, both as Managing Director and personally. During the 2007 awards year, he qualified for Northwestern Mutual’s Forum (top 200 representatives in the company) finishing 77th out of over 8,000 financial representatives.

Susan (Schroeder) Langheim

Susan (Schroeder) Langheim - Susan Langheim, who is being inducted into the Hall of Fame for Achievement, graduated from GHSin 1976. Remembered by her former high school teachers for her perseverance and enthusiasm, (one even recalls her begging him to start a girls track team) it comes as no surprise that she has taken the reigns of her father’s Chevrolet dealership, and later, the adjacent Honda dealership. She began working for her dad at Friendly Chevrolet when she was just 12-years-old, working through the years in each department. She became the owner in the mid-90s and also owns Honda of Illinois. Though the auto industry has seen its share of challenges through the years, under Susan’s leadership, both dealerships continue to thrive. As successful as she is as a business owner, she has found equal success in the triathlon arena. Though she’s only been competing for a little over two years, she has competed in many, and even won a few, local, regional and national triathlons. She was one of 18 Americans in her age group to qualify for the World Championship Series held in Budapest, Hungary, after a great showing at the National Series in Alabama. In between triathlons, she competed and finished so well in the New York City Marathon in November, 2009,that she qualified for the Boston Marathon which was held in the spring of 2010.

Lozelle H. Cleaves - Lozelle Cleaves is the posthumous selection for the 2011 Hall of Fame. He was a coach and teacher whose tenure included weathering the consolidation of Ball Township High School and Chatham High School in 1948-49.Mr. Cleaves came to the Ball Township School District in 1945. He coached basketball for ten years, and baseball and track and field for 23 years, all the while building a reputation of integrity and practical persuasion. After the two township districts consolidated, Mr. Cleaves’ first seven student basketball team went 14-10. His basketball teams subsequently went on to win 97 games in his 10 years of coaching basketball and countless wins in baseball and track and field. At the end of his tenure, he had 56 seasons of coaching in one school district—a record that few others can match.

1998-1999 Wrestling Team - The 1998-99 Wrestling team has been nominated for
induction into the Hall of Fame in the Athletic Team
category. It is considered to be the most successful wrestling
team in the history of the program. Members accomplished
both team and individual success with seven state qualifiers,
three sectional champions and one state placer. Many of the
records that were set that year stand today. Their most
significant accomplishment may have been the adversity
they overcame en route to becoming a great team. The team
was forced to shut down for nearly two weeks because of a
contagious viral skin condition, lost five dual meets and one
tournament, but rebounded for one of the best finishes in
school history. The team had a mix of athletes from many
sports other than wrestling. What defined this group was a
devotion to hard work, team unity, and most importantly, a
level of class that showed on and off the mat.

1998 Football Team -  The 1998 Glenwood football team had everything, from the golden arm of Griff Jurgens to the powerful foot of Zach Murphy, from the sure hands of Kenny Boyle to the sure hands of Bill Clayton, from the strong legs of Chris Ross to the solid blocks of Bob Perkins, Andrew Schlichting, Mike Stegeman, Mike Thompson and Steve Hoppe. There was nothing this team lacked, and then there was a swarming athletic defense that included the aggressive play of Charles Brunn, Adam Coombe, Jeremy Lynch, Caylan Hill and Skip Clayton and the ball-hawking abilities of Mike Pierce. They were Redskins then, and they took no prisoners. They had more than 5,000 yards of total offense. They romped through the season unbeaten at 14-0, holding seven of their nine regular-season opponents to one touchdown or less. Then in the playoffs they beat a Rantoul team loaded with Division I athletes, went to the Chicago suburbs and handed traditional powerhouse Oak Park Fenwick a 15-point beating and then beat Canton at home. Who will ever forget the 37-34 double overtime win at Geneseo? And it was all capped on a warm Saturday afternoon two days after Thanksgiving with a 28-21 victory over Kankakee Bishop McNamara in the Class 4A title game. It was the first state football title ever by a Central State Eight Conference school.

1996 Baseball Team - When spring rolled around in 1996, there were great expectations for the Chatham Glenwood High School baseball team, and coach Pat Moomey's team lived up to all of them. Just the year before the Redskins had compiled a 35-6 record, had won the school's first Class AA sectional title and advanced to the title game in the state tournament before losing 12-4 to Morris.

The '96 Glenwood team had lost two of its top four pitchers and five of its top nine hitters from that state runner-up team, but there was plenty of talent remaining. And while Moomey spent the first month of the season firming the Redskins' defense, the pitching was solid with ace returnees Adam Feld (13-0 in '95 and 12-0 in '96) and Jay Crawford (12-1 in '96).
Craig Moreland settled in at shortstop, teaming with David Littrell to form the double play combination. Matt Whalen was at first base with sophomore Scott Metz at third. Dustin Downs and Keith Ramsey were on the corners in the outfield, and the defense really became solidified when Moomey brought freshman Skip Clayton in to play center field.

And the guy who held everything together was catcher Jayson Werth, a future first-round draft choice. Werth was as good a defensive catcher as Central Illinois had ever seen, and during one eight-game stretch of the season he batted .724 with five home runs and 14 runs batted in. He wound up hitting .463 with five home runs, 36 runs batted in and 22 stolen bases.

The Redskins won the Central State Eight Conference title with a 13-1 record. They beat Sacred Heart-Griffin 10-5 to win their third straight regional title. They beat Champaign Centennial 5-4 - on Werth's two-out bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth inning - to win the sectional. They hammered Orland Park Sandburg 13-3 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, then Crawford tossed a one-hitter as Glenwood beat Moline 6-0 in the semifinals.

In the title game against Aurora Waubonsie Valley , Moomey strung together the pitching trio of Metz , Crawford and Feld in a 7-5 victory. Werth had two hits, drove in two runs and threw out a would-be base-stealer. Ramsey and Downs also had two hits each, and Waubonsie Valley made six errors that led to five unearned runs.

It was the first state championship in Glenwood High School history. The Redskins finished 31-6. Eight starters batted .300 or better, and the team batting average was .349. The pitchers were stingy, too, with a 2.98 team earned run average and 241 strikeouts in 244 innings.

Most notable was her varsity letter in basketball, as that team made it to the Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament that year. She held a record in the 3200 meter run at the high school for over 17 years, and holds the record for most assists in basketball during a game. She was chosen to be Runner of the Year by the Springfield Running Club and went on to run cross-country at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Her athletic accomplishments, however, may best be remembered in relation to her track performances. In addition, she was chosen team captain for several years in all three sports in which she participated. In 1989, she was chosen as scholar/athlete of the year.  In 1994 Shannon became the youngest female in the nation to be hired by the U.S. Marshals Service. While attending the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA, Shannon set the national record for the 1.5 mile run which she held until 2000. She graduated from FLETC with honors as one of two graduating candidates to pass the fitness requirements to enter the prestigious “500” club. She was assigned to the Chicago office where she was chosen to be one of 10 individuals to represent the USMS at a leadership conference. This type of recognition continues today.

He served in this capacity until the retirement of Mr. Bill Hovey in June 1988, at which point, he moved into the superintendent position. He retired as superintendent in 1993. Mr. Kauerauf saw many changes during his years at Ball-Chatham, and was successful in so many of the initiatives set before him. Arlen Nelson – Arlen Nelson taught Physical Education at Glenwood Junior High School from 1967 through 1999. Throughout his tenure, he also served, at various times, as assistant cross-country, flag football and boys track coach, department coordinator, and junior high head cross country coach. He is probably best remembered for his remarkable dedication to his students. Most Glenwood graduates from 1968 to 2003 can probably tell you the names of Arlen’s dogs. His dogs practically lived at the field house because Arlen practically lived there. He was always working to make things better for the kids. Arlen taught by example that dedication, hard work and gentle manner are to be respected and emulated. One can still find Arlen today at a Glenwood football or basketball game, or cross-country meet continuing to support the kids at Glenwood.
